U.S. SOLAR CONTRACTORS | HOME BATTERY BACKUP

A home battery installation starts with deciding what you want to keep running. For Charleston homeowners, the right design depends on your essential loads, desired outage runtime, existing solar equipment, and electrical service. Choosing a battery by capacity alone can leave important questions unanswered.

At a glance

  • Choose essential loads before selecting batteries.

  • Compare both power output and stored energy.

  • Confirm outage operation, solar recharging, and the complete installed scope.

Choose the loads before the equipment

  • Refrigeration and essential lighting.

  • Internet and selected receptacles.

  • Well pumps or other essential motors.

  • Air conditioning, if it is part of your backup goal.

Share actual appliance and HVAC details with your installer. Large motors and simultaneous loads can determine required output even when daily energy use is modest.

Understand power and energy

Battery capacity in kilowatt-hours describes stored energy. Power in kilowatts describes how much the system can deliver at once. A system may have enough energy for several hours of light use while lacking the output needed to start a particular appliance. Ask for both continuous output and motor-starting compatibility to be evaluated.

A simple runtime example

If 10 kWh is available to serve backup loads averaging 1 kW, the basic calculation is 10 hours. This is an illustration, not a runtime guarantee. Conversion losses, reserve settings, battery condition, temperature, and changing household loads affect the actual result. Solar recharging may extend runtime when the system supports it and weather permits.

Whole-home or selected-load backup?

A whole-home connection does not mean every appliance can run simultaneously. Some designs use a dedicated backed-up loads panel; others use load management to control larger equipment. Review which circuits remain available during an outage and what operating limits apply.

Adding batteries to existing solar

Compatibility depends on the installed inverter, battery system, controls, and approved electrical configuration. Some retrofits can retain existing solar equipment, while others require changes. Bring your equipment list and any existing plans. Confirm that solar can recharge the battery during an outage as part of the proposed design; this should never be assumed.

What should an installation proposal include?

  • Battery model, quantity, and usable storage.

  • Power output limits and the circuits backed up.

  • Transfer or isolation equipment.

  • Monitoring and commissioning.

  • Required panel work and site preparation.

  • Permitting and utility coordination for the property.

Compare the total installed scope, not battery hardware prices alone.

Installation and handover

  • Choose equipment placement that follows manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements.

  • Complete commissioning and demonstrate backup operation where appropriate.

  • Explain reserve settings and monitoring.

  • Keep final documentation and warranty information with the home’s electrical records.
