Electrical Panel Upgrades in Charleston: What the Job Includes

An electrical panel upgrade is a good time to plan for the way your home will actually use power. An EV charger, workshop, new appliances, or future solar equipment can affect the scope. Before comparing quotes, understand whether you need a panel replacement, additional circuits, a feeder repair, or a change to the electrical service.

The right scope starts with the home’s electrical demand and equipment condition. Empty breaker spaces alone do not prove that capacity is available.

Panel replacement and service upgrade are different

The panel distributes electricity to circuits in the home. The service includes other equipment supplying that panel. Replacing a panel does not automatically increase the capacity of the service. An electrician needs to assess the existing equipment and loads before recommending the right approach.

A real Charleston project scope

One recent scope prepared by U.S. Solar Contractors combined a main-panel replacement, a replacement subpanel feeder, and a dedicated EV charger circuit. Planning those items together made the responsibilities clear: transferring existing circuits, labeling, checking connections, coordinating the power interruption, and testing the completed work. The scope was tailored to that property, rather than treated as a universal package.

What a detailed electrical proposal should address

  • Equipment: the proposed panel and compatible protective devices.

  • Existing circuits: transfer, identification, and any repairs found necessary.

  • Feeders: condition and suitability of wiring serving downstream panels.

  • New loads: dedicated circuits and capacity evaluation for planned equipment.

  • Grounding and bonding: assessment and corrections included in the scope.

  • Coordination: applicable permits, utility disconnect and reconnect arrangements, and inspections.

  • Completion: labeling, connection checks, and testing.

Plan for the power interruption

Main-panel work can require a scheduled outage. Ask how the electrician, utility, and inspection authority will coordinate, and what could delay reconnection. Discuss any critical household needs before the appointment. A quoted installation duration is different from a guaranteed utility restoration time.

Why estimates vary

Two homes with similar panels can need different work. Cable routing, feeder condition, access, equipment location, existing defects, and the scope of utility involvement all affect the job. Ask what is included and how additional repairs will be documented and approved. A clear written scope is more useful than a low price that leaves out necessary work.

Electrical work: common questions

Does every EV charger require a panel upgrade? No. The answer depends on the home’s available capacity, the charging equipment, and the proposed installation. A load assessment should come first.

Can electrical repairs and a new circuit be handled together? Often they can be planned together. Tell your electrician about future loads early so the options can be evaluated.

Should I remove the panel cover for a quote photo? No. Send photos with covers closed and leave access to energized equipment to the electrician.
